Deglacial Ventilation Changes in the Deep Southwest Pacific

چکیده
Processes underlying changes in the oceanic carbon storage during Last Glacial Maximum and subsequent deglaciation are not fully understood. Here, we present a new high-resolution radiocarbon reconstruction (expressed as ?14R) at depth of modern Lower Circumpolar Deep Water from Pacific Sector Southern Ocean. Our record shows ?14R increases Heinrich Stadial 1 Younger Dryas that agree with deep-to-shallow transfer old Ocean these two periods. also shows, for first time, clear ?80‰ decline Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR), indicating development poorly ventilated conditions deep Southwest Pacific. These consistent increased sea-ice associated stratification between Upper Waters. This enhanced South possibly facilitated greater ocean interior ACR, effectively limiting CO2 release contributing to atmospheric plateau observed ice cores time.

Synchronous deglacial thermocline and deep-water ventilation in the eastern equatorial Pacific
The deep ocean is most likely the primary source of the radiocarbon-depleted CO2 released to the atmosphere during the last deglaciation. While there are well-documented millennial scale Δ14C changes during the most recent deglaciation, most marine records lack the resolution needed to identify more rapid ventilation events. Furthermore, potential age model problems with marine Δ14C records may...
متن کاملDeglacial changes in dust flux in the eastern equatorial Pacific
Atmospheric dust levels may play important roles in feedbacks linking continental source areas, tropical convection, marine productivity, and global climate. These feedbacks appear to be particularly significant in the tropical Pacific, where variations in local convection and productivity have been demonstrated to have impacts on climate at higher latitudes. Modeling of past dust levels and re...
متن کاملDeep water formation in the North Pacific and deglacial CO2 rise
Deep water formation in the North Atlantic and Southern Ocean is widely thought to influence deglacial CO2 rise and climate change; here we suggest that deep water formation in the North Pacific may also play an important role. We present paired radiocarbon and boron isotope data from foraminifera from sediment core MD02-2489 at 3640m in the North East Pacific. These show a pronounced excursion...
متن کاملNitrogen isotopic evidence for deglacial changes in nutrient supply in the eastern equatorial Pacific
[1] The Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) is a high nutrient–low chlorophyll region of the ocean. Downcore nitrogen isotope records from the EEP have been previously interpreted as a direct reflection of changes in nutrient consumption. However, the observed changes in sedimentary dN since the last glacial maximum have no coherent relationship with export productivity or an inferred variation in...
متن کاملLarge deglacial shifts of the Pacific Intertropical Convergence Zone
The position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is sensitive to changes in the balance of heat between the hemispheres which has fundamental implications for tropical hydrology and atmospheric circulation. Although the ITCZ is thought to experience the largest shifts in position during deglacial stadial events, the magnitude of shifts has proven difficult to reconstruct, in part becau...
